What it is

What Is Sun Damaged Skin?

Sun damaged skin is skin changed by years of ultraviolet exposure. It shows up as uneven tone, flat brown marks, and a rougher texture.

Tone and texture are affected separately, so they can be treated separately. Your provider will look at both.

How this is usually described

  • Flat brown marks on the cheekbones, temples or backs of the hands
  • An uneven tone across the face
  • A rougher texture noticeable when light hits the skin from the side
  • Fine lines through areas with the most exposure
  • A difference between habitually covered and uncovered skin

What contributes to it

  • Cumulative ultraviolet exposure over years
  • Light reflected off snow in winter and off open water in summer
  • Concentrated exposure across a short, bright summer season
  • Individual skin type, which varies a great deal among people
  • Natural shifts in the skin's collagen and elastin with age
Understanding Sun Damage

How Sun Damage Develops in Northeastern Pennsylvania

Sun damage builds up over years, not over a single summer. Ultraviolet light reaches your skin on cold and cloudy days too, and here it arrives from two directions: snow and open water both reflect it straight back up. That is why daily sun protection matters year round in northeastern Pennsylvania, not just in July.

Prevention and treatment

How to Prevent and Treat Sun Damage

  • Use daily sun protection year round rather than seasonally.
  • Wear sunglasses and cover up on bright winter days as well as summer ones.
  • Ask about medical-grade skin care as the groundwork.
  • Ask about SkinPen® microneedling, with or without PRP, for texture.
  • Have any mark that has changed in size, shape, color or border checked by a physician or dermatologist first.
Questions

Sun Damage & Uneven Tone: common questions

Can you get sun damage in northeastern Pennsylvania?

Yes. Scranton averages fewer sunny days than the national average, but the exposure arrives concentrated into a short, bright summer, and winter adds light reflected off snow. Cumulative exposure adds up either way.

Does snow reflect ultraviolet light?

Fresh snow reflects a large share of the ultraviolet light that falls on it, sending it back up at angles direct sun never reaches. This is why eye protection and sun protection matter on the slopes.

Should I have a mark checked before treating it cosmetically?

Yes. Any mark that has changed in size, shape, color or border, or that bleeds or itches, should be evaluated by a physician or dermatologist before any cosmetic treatment is considered.
