Botox® vs. Dysport® vs. Xeomin®: What Is the Difference?
What the Three Share
Botox® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and Xeomin® are prescription neurotoxins in the same category of medicine. Each softens expression lines, the frown lines between the brows, the rows across the forehead, the crow’s feet beside the eyes, by relaxing the small muscles that crease the skin.
The treatment experience is the same across brands: a short appointment, softening that begins in about three to seven days, full effect at about two weeks, and results that typically last about three to four months.
Where They Differ
Botox® Cosmetic is approved in adults for the improvement of moderate to severe frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet. Dysport® and Xeomin® are approved in adults for moderate to severe frown lines.
Units are measured differently across brands, so a dose of one is not a dose of another. Your provider doses by brand, which is one reason treatment starts with a consultation rather than a number.
Xeomin® is formulated without the accessory proteins the other two carry. For most patients the three behave similarly, and history with one brand is often the most useful guide.
How a Provider Chooses
We discuss your concerns and review your options. Your provider recommends a brand based on your face, your goals, and your history with any of them, and doses conservatively; the outcome we work toward is that you look rested and like yourself.
Botox® vs. Dysport® vs. Xeomin®: common questions
Is one brand stronger than the others?
No brand is stronger; the units are measured differently, so numbers do not compare across brands. Your provider doses each brand to the same goal.
Can I switch brands?
Yes. Providers commonly move patients between brands based on how their skin responds. Bring your treatment history to the consultation.
How long do results last?
Typically about three to four months with any of the three, which makes this a maintenance treatment rather than a one-time one.
